Hmmm... the last time that I posted a workaround that involved "mount
-F lofs -O ..." to get my improved wrappers to override the binaries
in the installation media people suggested it was a bit extreme of a
hack.  :)

Just eager to be able to play with the installation code to work on
some of the same things that Peter has already begun to analyze.

Most definitely.

Back in the early days of SMF people were posting boot charts to help
understand what was happening during the Solaris boot process. 
Perhaps it woud be helpful in getting better timing info for those
mysterious minutes early on.
