Ok
The install has finished and the system is running fine without setting
ata-dma-enabled=0 in grub.
I have tried thrashing the disk with dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/tmp/fred bs=1024
count=1024000 and only takes 1:43 plus no error in /var/adm/messages
The disk is faster than the same test on my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo D

Does this mean that I don't have a disk problem now the system is running the
full OS?

Cheers
Richard
