I downloaded the trial version, tried it and it looked OK, but I haven't
been motivated enough until now to download the full version. Fact is, you
can open HTML files under word either as text or HTML and use the normal
Word Count function. You can also write a macro to open all files frm the
Web site.

There has been a discussion on u-forum (German Translator forum) some time
ago and the conscensus was "why bother".

IMHO, downloading the whole site is a lot more bother and can take a very
long time. That's where you should look for an efficient program, except if
you want to do your count on the Web site directly, without downloading it.
Don't think it's easy and it's not reliable since you don't know where the
site really ends.
