Hi,

I tend to put the same device on several different maps. For example, I have a big
map with all my devices on it. Then I have smaller maps that show specific subsets of
my devices, such as my WAN, my servers, etc.

The problem with InterMapper's current design is that a device is polled once for each
appearance on a map. If I have a device on four maps, then it will (apparently) be
polled four times within 30 seconds. Also, each poll shows up in the event log, and
if the device has an error, there are four separate alerts.

I'd like some way to avoid this duplication, and what occurs to me is to separate the
devices from the maps. InterMapper would have a global list of every device, and
update the maps with status information from this global list.

When the polling cycle for a map came to a device, instead of polling the device
directly, the global list would be checked. If it has recent data in it (defined as
"collected within the map's polling interval"), grab it from the global list and
update the map. If not, go ahead and poll. If the device is discovered to be in an
error condition, check the global list to see if a notification has already happened,
and only notify if necessary.

It probably wouldn't be necessary to change IM's interface to accomplish this.
However, an interface change might be nice. Instead of adding devices to a map, you'd
add them to the global device list window. You could create maps in a hurry from this
list - select your devices and choose File > New, and IM would make a new map with the
selected devices already on it and not bother with auto-discovery. You could drag a
device from the list to a map, and it would be set up already, with the proper probe
type, label, shape, notification options, etc. You could get rid of the idea of
separate polling intervals for the maps, and just poll the global list. Whenever a
device is polled, update each map where the device appears. This would allow you to
set polling intervals per device.
