Hi, it's me again. My brain won't shut up this evening :)

I am currently monitoring 327 devices with InterMapper, with a fairly dynamic network.
I'm spending a lot of time modifying maps, and I want more automation.

Specifically:

1) Automatic topology detection. This would be HUGELY appreciated! I would like to
be able to put a bunch of devices on a map, and then tell IM to hook them together
correctly. Currently, I do this manually, with the following process:

a) start with the IP address of the device I want to connect
b) look in my routers and/or IM server's ARP info to discover the MAC address (or use
SNMP to query it directly)
c) look in each switch until I find the MAC address, and note the port that's attached
to it
d) show all the ports on the switch (a pain; some of my switches have 120 ports)
e) connect the device to the correct port
f) hide the ports again

There's no reason why IM couldn't do this for me.

When I've got all the devices properly connected, I need:

2) Automatic map layout!

There's a cool algorithm called the spring embedder that can automatically draw a nice
map of connected nodes.

It should also be possible to do a heirarchical map layout, like an org chart. Either
top down or right-to-left.

There are other map layout enhancements that I would love to see:

a) snap to grid
b) lock object
c) "smart links" automatically route around obstacles

Comments?

Thanks,

Doug
