Hi, I just had a look at the new Host Resource Probe, and I don't find it very satisfactory either.
On my OS X IM server I get a large list of storage devices (12 of them), most of which
aren't physical disks. Some are on the network, and some are things like swap space
and buffer memory. I have two instances of /dev and something that says it's a /.vol
- both of these show two blocks available with two blocks used, which trips the disk
space alarm regardless of the free space on my hard disk.
Ideally we'd be able to decide (from the list given to us by the SNMP agent) which
device to monitor.
Another problem is that on my host popup window, the last several characters of the
disk alarms are cut off. The last line reads "Usage of disk at index 9 e". If
devices 10, 11, and 12 had errors I wouldn't know it from the popup. There's probably
a limit to the number of characters that can be written to this popup, and what with
all my storage devices and alarms I've passed it.
Another problem: once I've selected the Host Resource probe type, I can't switch to
another SNMP-based probe. The popup window stays stubbornly fixed on the Host
Resource display. (This may be related to the text overflow bug.) If I switch the
type to a Ping/Echo probe, I can then choose a different SNMP probe - such as my own
custom host resource probe :)
Speaking of which, attached to this message is a custom SNMP probe that looks at the
host resource MIB and only monitors one storage device and up to two CPUs. It could
be expanded to monitor more of either, but I suggest just creating another probe to
monitor a different disk. You put in the device index of the device you want to
monitor. If you don't know what the index is, start from 1 and work up until you see
the correct device name in the popup window.
I've only tested it a little bit but it seems to work pretty well. The CPU
utilization doesn't currently work on OS X as has already been noted, but it seems to
work for the few Windows machines I've tried it on. Apparently there's an agent
missing on my Novell servers - it doesn't work for the ones I've tried. (I made a
special custom Novell host resource probe that I use for them, anyway.)
It's possible my Windows mail program will mangle the special double-bracket
characters in the Mac text file - sorry about that.
Enjoy,
Doug

Hi All..
1: I'm wondering if it would be possible to change the HRP to display
something more usable data, like changing the Size/Used numbers to
human [fast] readable numbers...
2: Could the window expand so Descr. don't wrap?
Consider this:
Host Resources Storage Table Information
Index Units Used Size Fail Descr.
1 0 0 0 0 A:\
2 512 31993717 35428427 0 C:\
Label:WINDOWS2000 Serial Number 6c582d2f
3 4096 7581030 8885945 0 D:\
Label:data Serial Number d03100a2
4 512 31993717 35428427 0 M:\
Label:Exchange Serial Number a98ac7
5 0 0 0 0 Z:\
6 65536 0 19947 0 Virtual
Memory
I would like it to show like this:
Host Resources Storage Table Information
Index Units Used Size Fail Descr.
1 0 0 0 0 A:\
2 512 31.993.717 Kb 35.428.427 Kb 0 C:\
Label:WINDOWS2000 Serial Number 6c582d2f
3 4096 7.581.030 Kb 8.885.945 Kb 0 D:\ Label:data
Serial Number d03100a2
4 512 31.993.717 Kb 35.428.427 Kb 0 M:\ Label:Exchange
Serial Number a98ac7
5 0 0 Kb 0 Kb 0 Z:\
6 65536 0 Kb 19.947 Kb 0 Virtual Memory
Or, even (on large numbers) scale it down to Mb numbers...
Could this be possible?
