IM and nagios

I have a question about IM working with nagios. I understand how to 
setup an IM probe to run a local nagios plugin, but for remote plugins 
(plugins that are installed and need to be run on a remote server) how 
would IM be able to transport the status data to and from the remote 
server?

Would you have to use the nagios NRPE add-on or is there something 
built-in to IM that takes care of the transport issue already? I 
suppose the check_by_ssh plugin could work as well but I am more 
interested in something with less overhead than SSH.

Also, just curious if anyone on this list uses IM as a map alternative 
to nagios' map status yet still using nagios to perform the 
checking/alarming/notification.
