We are actually already prepared to manually work on permissions. Since we knew that all IM users would be authenticated by IM itself, we decided that first time AD authorized users would be dumped into an IM group that basically only gave them read access to a "landing map." Then we would adjust permissions as needed case by case (tedious, but functional).
