In my experience different manufacturers count discards in different
ways, and their documentation is always very hazy about exactly what
constitutes a discard.

If you're dubious, you can rule out interference from IM by using
Net-SNMP to see for yourself what the device is reporting. If it
shows a different value than what's visible in IM, you should
definitely submit that for us to take a look at.
