The developers should really take a serious look at this issue or it will come back to haunt them later. I'm not sure why no one seems comment on your proposal and patch. It seemed like a well thought-out and good proposal to me.
I'm also wondering what happened to the namespace declaration change to brackets {}. I've downloaded the latest snap of 5.3 and that has not changed as of yet.
