Just another small comment about PHP_INI_SCAN_DIR, it was introduced in
5.2.7, I assume you're packaging the current stable but just to be on
the safe side I thought I'd mention it :)

About GTK, what exactly happens? It should not crash the PHP module

it should be disabled. That is, PHP_MINIT should include a check of
SAPI and return FAILURE in the event the current SAPI cannot be
operated under.
Another extension I guess should do that is PCNTL, known not to work
well in web server context.
