Four postgraduate funding opportunities are available beginning in
2014/2015 for PhD research in the areas of conflict studies, peace
studies, post-conflict peacebuilding, reconciliation and transitional
justice within the Social Sciences, Law, Education and Divinity and
Religious Studies at the University of Aberdeen. This program
provides three years of funding and offers students the opportunity
to work within the new Institute for Conflict, Transition, and Peace
Research (ICTPR) and engage with an interdisciplinary faculty with
expertise across regions and topics.

Areas of interest include but are not limited to:

Violently divided societies; ethnonationalism and conflict;
radicalization and deradicalization; the politics of peace
processes;  the role of education in societal healing; equality of
opportunity and post-conflict justice; gender and peacebuilding;
transitional justice mechanisms; independence movements; non-violent
political action; civil society and peacebuilding; refugees and
displaced peoples; religion and peacebuilding; victims and
perpetrators.

The programme offers features that are particularly attractive in
this expanding field, such as

- Working with acknowledged experts across a diversity of regions and
  topics
- Opportunities for imaginative and innovative interdisciplinary
  topics
- Cross-disciplinary supervision
- Well established and well resourced library facilities and holdings
- Opportunities to link with empirical research projects underway in
  this area
- Opportunities to work with civil society groups in practitioner
  roles
- Attention to career development, as well as public engagement

Awards

We invite applications for 4 PhD studentships from high achieving
students to join us in pursuing rigorous disciplinary and/or
interdisciplinary research into these questions.

Each award consists of a full fee waiver (three years of full-time
PhD study at the Home/EU or Overseas student rate as appropriate) and
an annual maintenance stipend of £3,600 for three years of full-time
study.

Application Process

A normal application for admission to the PhD programme including a
research proposal is required and applicants should make explicit
note their interest in being considered for a 'Conflict, Transition,
and Peace Studentship' in their application materials.
