Conference Announcement Theme: Feasibility and the Ethics of War Type: International Workshop Institution: Australia National University Location: Canberra, ACT (Australia) Date: 18.–19.7.2014 __________________________________________________ Recent political theory has cast light on the so-called 'feasibility requirement', that principles to guide political action can be invalidated if they make infeasible prescriptions. This topic has obvious relevance to the morality of war, in which endemic uncertainty and the pressures of combat make acting in accordance with exacting norms extremely difficult. And yet these two fields have barely intersected. This workshop brings together leading figures from both fields to remedy that defect, and consider in depth the role of feasibility considerations in the ethics of war. The workshop is part of the activities of the ARC Discovery Project, Political Normativity and the Feasibility Requirement, the ARC DECRA project Justifying War, and the Centre for Moral, Social, and Political Theory, and has been supported by the RSSS directorate, and the CASS Research Committee. The workshop is open, but numbers will be limited (there is no registration fee). Please RSVP if you would like to attend, to seth.la...@anu.edu.au, cc katy.wil...@anu.edu.au. If you are able to join us for the workshop dinner on the 18th, please let us know.
