I just recently discovered Swans and have also noticed some simiarities between them and earlyCranes. Have Cranes ever mentioned liking or being influenced by Swans? I also wondered because of the similarity in names.

Hi there
I agree on the fact that the live cd is very laidback (but not bad) ! The drums are very silent.
I was one of the first Cranes fans in Belgium (since 1991). I saw them play Starblood live in the MTV studios on Tv, and I was sold ! I thought ' wow ,who are these guys !?'.
On their first gigs Alison was always dressed in a white fairy-like dress and the guys where dressed in black and had dreadlocks and piercings. The early fans were all Gothic people. Actually , their audience at that time was all black dressed ! They sounded like a neat cross between Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twin,s Joy Division and Swans back then . (my favourite 4 bands)
Since then they seem to want to get rid of their Gothic tag and seem to evolve to a pure pop band. All the 'disturbing' things like the screaming, the heavy drums and the guitar walls have gone since them.
However , I will always stay a Cranes -fan.

yeah, i was one of the people at the '02 los angeles show who was screaming for "starblood" for the whole second half of the show. nobody really joined in though, and i get the feeling that the large majority of the crowd didn't really even know who the cranes were. but now that i look back, there really weren't any guitar heavy songs in the entire setlist except for "adrift", and that's pretty much entirely different from the guitar heavy stuff off of wings of joy. (i don't know about fuse as i still haven't heard that album) And "sixth of may" has always been a favorite of mine too that would have been nice to have heard. but other than that, i was mostly satisfied with the setlist as they did play a lot of their good older songs. they played my favorite, "far away", and after that i was pretty much content. i did write down the entire set list, but i misplaced it. i believe they played "adoration" which i love, but did ! not play "tomorrow's tears" which i really would have appreciated.

they want to move on with their more "chilled" style of music? THe whole
live album has a very chilled sound to it, and DAD001 is similarly relaxed.
I think it's a different question. "Starblood" was a real thing with Mark
Francombre. Nowadays it wouldn't make sense anymore, with Paul trying to
imitate Mark.
Playing "Starblood" today would be as summoning a ghost.
Though they all know people would die to hear older tunes played live, I
suppose they're mumbling on it, when people at concerts ask for "Reach", or
"Sixth of May" for example.
