I'd second that recommendation. I started out with ion3 only a few
weeks ago and

I've been using Ion3 for months and it has never crashed on me (to my
knowledge). I love that it (a) gets out of my way and (b) follows ICCCM
I am fairly new to Ion myself - starting in a "safe" way, my first
approach was to Ion2, but I gave Ion3 a try shortly after, and am still
very happy and never had any problem - and thought it was silly not to
have started out on Ion3 in the first place. I had to rewrite/adapt some
of configurations, but that only helped - that was the only annoyiance
I've ever had, and all my fault. In my experience Ion3 is stable enough to
be used without any troubles.
