Maybe not the solution you're looking for, but... CVS versions of mplayer (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/) can play RealMedia streams (audio and video) in a ICCCM and Ion-friendly way. I've been using it for a while now -- RealPlayer/RealOne failed to work on my PC (probably because my soundcard only supports 48KHz playback; nothing else) and I need my fix of the UK's BBC Radio 1 while I'm in France!
