If someone has the time to draw up the text changes, I can make it happen or
even give edit (if not publish) rights to the website. The website is in its
state because the only person with rights to edit it has absolutely no time
to
write new content -- that's me.

having opened my big mouth i guess i need to actually do sth.  bummer.
 give me a few days, i'll come up with sth.

meanwhile: i don't suppose you (and others involved) would countenance
dita-based docs?  you can find an example at
https://github.com/mobileink/boot-documentation-library

nice thing is you can generate a variety of output formats (html, pdf,
wtc.) from one dita codebase.
