Because of the way AT&T calculates the charges on the account. The phone that is eligible is the ‘primary’ one on the account and will be able to get updates faster. The more money you spend per month, the faster you can qualify for a complete subsidy.

I spoke to a friendly, but unable to help CSR last night about the same issue. I explained how disappointed I was, since last year, when we went through the same thing, we were told we could "pay the difference in the subsidy", so we went ahead and upgraded line 2 to the iPhone 4, assuming, incorrectly, that by "paying the difference" we wouldn't reset our upgrade eligibility on that line. Of course this year, we are informed it wasn't "the difference" but just an "early upgrade fee" which not just retriggered a two year contract (we knew this) but also reset our eligibility date (was NOT explained that way).

To be honest, they are BEGGING people to go check out options. My prorated cancellation fee is $175. The early upgrade fee is $250. We pay $220 a month for the two lines for 2100 minutes.

The closest plan on Sprint for a family plan would be $189.99 a month + taxes, which shouldn't be MORE than $220 total, but probably close, except it's 3000 minutes.

I explained that to the rep, who informed me Sprint didn't have the iPhone, and Verizon didn't have unlimited data, and I would lose my plan. I reminded her that she was a little incorrect, in that Sprint now does have the phone AND unlimited Internet, and for the difference between the $250 and the $175, they were begging me to look into at least cancelling one line, possibly both.

I spoke to someone at customer retention, who promises to email me back.

I would deeply miss internet & voice at the same time, although I have a MiFi which could mitigate that somewhat. I guess an iPhone group is the worst place to ask this... but how's Sprint service? Anyone in Florida have experience?
