REST with JSON would be fine (Axis2 supports both, if that's what you are using). Pay attention to authentication, and attack mechanisms; since a web client is calling the service, the service can be vulnerable to attack. with a RESTful service (and JSON) you can then use Ajax/Jquery on the client side.
