One useful aspect of ICMP is in tracerouting, where you get an ip address of a particular interface, and then through a reverse dns lookup, you get a human readable name for the interface. Very useful for troubleshooting where errant packets are going. Not very useful if you get a device loop-back, resulting in some information being lost. Or is there an alternate mechanism for providing this level of detail in IPv6 traceroutes?
