I don't know if the pattern has changed Neil, but Jon Pearkins was
mentioning that they were moving to some sort of "modulation
dependent carrier level" scheme. This seems to mean that the carrier
level drops as modulation level increases. At the least, it means
savings on the power bill, as even with speech you can see a 4dB
variation in the carrier level. (Half power is 3dB, so bet they
collected some green dollars from the government for that modification as well)
I'll wait for a broadcast engineer to chime in, as I don't really
know the metrics of defining total AM transmitter power, but CBU may
have similar audio punch to their earlier higher power when
presumably, the carrier was roaring away full bore even when the
announcer was snoozing.
