----------------------------------------------------------- New Message on Irish Fencing Forum
----------------------------------------------------------- From: DexterSin Message 12 in Discussion I was looking at fencingforum.com the other day, and they were talking about an aspect of the old timings that hadn't occurred to me before: when someone advances with their "point aimed at Jupiter" (nice one) and their hapless opponent straightens their arm and hits them, the fencer with the bent arm had lots of time, under the old timings, to hit them with a flick to the back. It was therefore much easier for bent-arm 'attacks' to succeed, as the old blocking times could allow a response to register long after the first hit. Under the new blocking times, this is much more difficult - flicks to the back are much less reliable, and you have much less time. Therefore, even if presidents still give the bent arm RoW, the fencer with the bent arm will have to finish his attack almost as soon as his opponent launches his counterattack, making it much easier for him to be timed for a quick parry-riposte (in theory). Also, he has to bring his point down and poke - not tap - his opponent, whose point is already in line with the target; therefore, bent-arm attackers have to respond faster from what is now a poor position.
