I'm a Chinese convert lives in Penang Island. I have a few questions to ask Dr. Danial. Hope Dr. Danial would able to answer my doubts. Why is it that we, Muslim, cannot touch the dog especially when the dog is wet? Is there a scientific reason behind these? Dog is also Allah's creation but eventhough we cannot touches the dog doesn't mean that we hate them right? There are even people disallow muslim people to wear anything that has a dog picture/graphic/sign on the T-shirts/dress/shoe on anything. Why?

ANSWER BY DR DAN IAL:
Islam wants its followers to be kind to animals including dogs. In a tradition narrated by Bukhari, the Prophet (pbuh) told his companions a story concerning a man who found a dog in the desert panting and licking the dust due to thirst. The man went to a well, filled his shoes with water, and relieved the dog's thirst. The messenger of Allah (pbuh) then said, "Allah appreciated his action and forgave all his sins." Furthermore, it is through the Quran that we get acquainted with the story of the Companions of the Cave who had with them their dog. This clearly shows that dogs have historically been used for guarding people and the property of its owners. The issue of dogs is one of the most debatable issues in recent times, especially today whereby many people in the west are reverting to Islam. Thus these reverts would raise a question like, "Can I keep my dog as a Muslim? Will my new religion take away from me my dog, which has become my closest friend?" ........................

However, Muslims should not forget that dogs pose a certain health hazard. It is worth mentioning that the health risks in getting too close to a dog, allowing it to lick childrenÂ’s hands, utensilsÂ…etc, should not be overlooked, especially as this has been affirmed by many experts. A German scientist, Dr. Gerard Finstimer, (translated from the German magazine, KOSINOS) shed light on the dangers of dogs to human health. He said........................
