On Friday 23 July 2005 a man was restrained on the ground on a tube train at
Stockwell by plain clothes police and summarily shot in the head 5 times. We
do not know his name, his background, his religion, his ideas, or the
allegations against him. For certain, the intelligence and security
services, whose past records include wrong information that was used to
legitimise the war on Iraq and miscarriages of justice against the Guildford
4 and Birmingham 6, do not know for certain whether this man was guilty of
anything. Yet he was executed on a train regardless of this fact.

What is most shocking is the fact that the media and politicians seem to
have accepted this without question. We may have all become desensitised to
the abandonment of legal principle in the west with Guantanamo, Belmarsh,
control orders, and the expected lowering of the burden of proof. However,
what happened on the 23 July, no matter who he was, Muslim or non-Muslim,
sinks to new depths. This is apparently the 'civilisation' that we are
supposed to welcome in the Muslim world as the best system of life, and for
which the war on terror is being fought. Yet in truth these things happen in
places like Burma, Zimbabwe and the dictatorships in the Muslim world and
from the viewpoint of Islam this is not civilised behaviour. From our
viewpoint the ends do not justify the means.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom
(i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue
with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone
astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided.}
(Holy Quran-16:125)

{And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in
His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites
(men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I
am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if
Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of
camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also said, "Whoever
calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who
follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all."
[Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
