The Siege of Gaza: Jumuah Lecture
“Verily, as for those who persecute believing men and believing women and thereafter do not repent, hell’s suffering awaits them: they will have the chastisement of the burning fire… truly strong is the grip of your Lord” (85:10/12)
All praise is due to Allah – the Lord of all the worlds – He gives power to whom He wills and He takes away power from whom He will – He honours whom He will and He disgraces whom He wills-  in His hand is all good. May His choicest salutations descend upon our Master and Leader who came as a mercy unto mankind.
Respected brothers and elders in Islam
In the first 3 weeks of June, Israel began pounding the Gaza with heavy artillery shelling. During this period 24 Palestinian civilians were killed another 77 wounded.  Of those killed 7 were members of the Ghalia family, both adults and children, who were carrying out the dangerous terrorist act of picnicking on Gaza beach.   Two days later, Israel killed another three children during its shelling attacks.
In an attempt to bring pressure on Israel to stop the attacks on civilians Palestinian mujahideen carried out a raid on one of the main bases from which the artillery shelling was taking place.  The raid resulted in two Israeli soldiers being killed and a third corporal being captured and taken prisoner.
Israel has now used the capture of the soldier as a pretext to intensify its attacks on Gaza with a view to bring down the Hamas lead PA. On June 27, Israeli began its invasion of Gaza, bombing bridges, bombing Gaza’s only power station, water plants and unleashing sonic bombs as a form of collective punishment against the civilian  population of Gaza in clear defiance of the Geneva Convention which prohibits ‘collective punishment’
Gaza, which is one of the most densely populated areas on the planet, is now suffering a large scale humanitarian crisis. Israeli war planes repeatedly bombed and utterly demolished Gaza's only power plant. About 700,000 of Gaza's 1.3 million people now have no electricity, and word is that power cannot be restored for six months.
In the excuse of rescuing one kidnapped soldier, Israel has kidnapped a third of the Palestinian parliament. Gaza is plunged into darkness, food is rotting because refrigerators do not work, and likewise hospitals and clinics can do very little without electricity. Gaza's public water supply is pumped by electricity. The taps are dry!
In short, over a million civilians are now trapped in their homes listening to Israeli shells, while facing the awful prospect, within days or weeks, of having to give toxic water to their children that may consign them to quick but agonizing deaths.
The plunder and pillage of the Zionist regime is similar to the proud and oppressive tribe of Aaad. “…and they (Aad) said: “Who is superior to us in power – Do they not see that Allah who created them- He is greater than them in power…” (41: 15) They were ultimately destroyed by furiously raging storm winds which continued for “seven nights and eight days” in the end they lay as though they were uprooted trunks of hollow palm trees.  History is undoubtedly bound to repeat itself!
The astonishing scale of this humanitarian situation is indeed matched only by the deafening drizzle of international reaction. We only hear muted mumbles and hypocritical calls for restraint. It is ironic that the world refuses to accept that the Palestinian predawn attack on the Israeli military base was a clear act of retaliation in which the corporal was captured in combat.
The fact that Israelis plunder, loot, and invade with absolute impunity and total disregard for international law is simply inexplicable. Edward Said aptly unveils this duplicity in the following words:
“It is simply extraordinary and without precedent that Israel’s history, its record – from the fact it …is a state built on conquest, that it has invaded surrounding countries, bombed and destroyed at will, to the fact that it currently occupies Lebanese, Syrian, and Palestinian territory against international law- is simply never cited, never subjected to scrutiny in the U.S. media or in official discourse … never addressed as playing any role at all in provoking Islamic terror”
The persecution of believers is a phenomenon not restricted to this age or time; it is ever recurring in varying degrees of intensity throughout recorded history! “Do men think that they will be spared by merely saying “We believe” and that they will not be tested” (29:2)
The respite the kufaar enjoy is but the completion of Allah’s argument against them!
Allah’s grip is strong, His power irresistible, His wisdom unquestionable.  The grand plan of Allah will certainly come to pass even though the tyrants detest it.
“Verily, as for those who persecute believing men and believing women and thereafter do not repent, hell’s suffering awaits them: they will have the chastisement of the burning fire… truly strong is the grip of your Lord” (85:10/12)
“And let those who bent on denying the truth not think that they shall escape Allah – behold they can never frustrate His (plan)” (8:59) There are many issues that we with our limited understanding may not fully comprehend. “And you shall certainly know the truth of it (all) after a while” (38: 88)
Nabi (saw) has said: “Believers (in their mutual concern for each other) are like a single individual, if his eye is in pain, his entire body is in pain, if his head is in pain, his entire body (becomes restless) with pain. (Muslim) Their pain is our pain, their loss is ours! The minimum we can do is read the qunoot e naazila and beg Allah for His forgiveness and mercy.

{Invite (mankind, O Muhammad ) to the Way of your Lord (i.e. Islam) with wisdom (i.e. with the Divine Inspiration and the Qur'an) and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. {And who is better in speech than he who [says: "My Lord is Allah (believes in His Oneness)," and then stands straight (acts upon His Order), and] invites (men) to Allah's (Islamic Monotheism), and does righteous deeds, and says: "I am one of the Muslims."} (Holy Quran-41:33)

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By Allah, if Allah guides one person by you, it is better for you than the best types of camels." [al-Bukhaaree, Muslim]

The prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)  also said, "Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward similar to the reward of the one who follows him, without the reward of either of them being lessened at all." [Muslim, Ahmad, Aboo Daawood, an-Nasaa'ee, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah]
