Having got CALCITE-1913's PR into a reasonable state, I am now attempting to 
rebase this PR on top of it. You can see the work-in-progress here: 
https://github.com/julianhyde/calcite/tree/1940-dialect-sequence. I'll post 
another comment when it's ready for review.
