Wes McKinney commented on CALCITE-2024:
---------------------------------------
Thanks [~lemire] and appreciated your work on bitpacking for parquet-cpp. I
think next year and beyond we will be starting to do more _actual_ analytics in
Arrow, creating an "operator kernel" library to make reference implementations
of many columnar array functions. Having your help there for SIMD-accelerated
variants and general processing efficiency would be very useful. We also have
not yet done much work on in-memory encoding or compression beyond dictionary
encoding (noted by Daniel Abadi here
http://dbmsmusings.blogspot.com/2017/10/apache-arrow-vs-parquet-and-orc-do-we.html),
so that's another area where your input would be great.
Happy to have you involved in the project!

> Submit an overview paper, with survey, architecture description, and some
> benchmark components to SIGMOD Record or VLDB Journal.
> SIGMOD Record:
> VLDB Journal:
> I will take a lead on this, create an Overleaf document, and invite all
> interested co-authors, up to 8 or 10.
> Target for completion on this is Jan-Feb 2018, with 3000-4000 words. We
> could also target on of the big conferences, and also look to submit extended
> journal version of the paper. I will ask Dan Suciu or Sam Madden who preside
> over both on their advice on this.
