Prior art to build on rather than invent (Claus, 2026-09-19): the Kamelet spec
already has data types for in, out and error (a format such as
application/json, text/plain, application/octet-stream, and a scheme-qualified
name), Camel's data type transformer registry and the transformDataType EIP
adapt a body from one declared type to another, and the CloudEvents ce-*
headers were the idea for carrying the declared type with the message. Only a
small set of Kamelets declares it today.
Two dimensions, both needed:
* the *format* (the Kamelet data type: json, xml, csv, text, bytes): what the
payload is, which is what transformDataType can convert between, and what the
docs and the MCP tools should show;
* the *carrier* (the Java type the format arrives in: text, bytes, stream,
file, Map/List, POJO): what the failures in this benchmark were about, since a
JSON body as a Map and as text look the same in a description and behave
differently in ${body.orderId}, jsonpath and Groovy.
So the catalog metadata should carry both, per component, data format, language
and EIP, with the Kamelet names for the format so a Kamelet and a plain
component are read the same way; the AI pass over the sources fills the whole
catalog, the message history of the reference runs verifies the carrier, and
the validator can then not only warn but suggest the transform or the
conversion step (convertBodyTo, unmarshal, transformDataType) that makes the
next step valid.
