I won't comment on the real issue since I never looked at Imaging's code at all.
[~damjan] has modified Compress' LZW implementation so it becomes a better fit
for Imaging[1] - it's inside Compress' trunk and the next release (1.10)
shouldn't be too far away. I have no idea how it compares to the existing LZW
implementation.
