Aman-Mittal opened a new pull request, #673: URL: https://github.com/apache/fineract-backoffice-ui/pull/673
Nothing in this repository told a contributor that Apache Fineract has a community outside these GitHub issues. `CONTRIBUTING.md` and `README.md` never mentioned the mailing list. Matrix was not referenced **anywhere** — not in the docs, not in the templates. So someone arriving with a feature idea had no way to learn that the project decides those on `[email protected]`, and would reasonably assume a GitHub issue was the whole process. ## Where it goes Each of these is a place the question actually comes up, rather than one page nobody reads: | File | What was added | |---|---| | `CONTRIBUTING.md` | A **Talk to the community first** section at the top, with a table of which channel suits which kind of question | | `README.md` | A **Community** section before the licence | | `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/feature_request.yml` | The list and the rooms, above the first field — where someone is about to file a feature request | | `.github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/config.yml` | The dev list and Matrix as contact links on the issue chooser | | `.github/pull_request_template.md` | A comment aimed at feature PRs, plus a checklist item | ## The line it draws The mailing list is the ASF's system of record; Matrix is day-to-day conversation. Both are useful and they are not interchangeable, so the wording says so directly — including that a conclusion reached in chat still has to be summarised to the list, or it did not happen as far as anyone in another timezone is concerned. It also says plainly that **bug fixes, refactors and test work need none of this**. Guidance that reads as a tax on every contribution gets ignored on the ones that matter, so the scope is stated rather than left for the reader to infer. The framing for feature requests is incentive rather than obligation: a proposal that arrives with a dev-list thread behind it already has the context, the objections and often a reviewer; one that only exists here starts cold. Both routes stay open. ## Verification Addresses and room links taken from [fineract.apache.org](https://fineract.apache.org/), not from memory: ``` [email protected] [email protected] https://lists.apache.org/[email protected] https://matrix.to/#/%23apache-fineract-home:matrix.org https://matrix.to/#/%23apache-fineract-dev:matrix.org https://matrix.to/#/%23apache-fineract-gsoc:matrix.org ``` All five URLs return `200`. The existing ASF Jira contact link is unchanged. ``` prettier --check clean scripts/check-license.sh clean all three issue templates parse as YAML ``` One thing worth flagging for anyone editing `config.yml` later: the Matrix entry is a folded scalar (`>-`) because an unquoted room name of the form `#name:matrix.org` starts a YAML comment. The first draft of that line silently truncated the description mid-sentence and still looked fine in a diff — it only showed up on parsing. The room is named in prose there instead.
