I added a bit on top of it and opened PR #270 for the changes.
@twalthr Can you have a look whether it makes sense to you?
The main change is that I removed the `updateTypeDependentProperties()`, as
that seemed a bit fragile to me. Instead, semantic properties are extracted
lazy now.
