Probably the patch attached is not salvageable. Agreed, I bit off more than was
reasonable for a single patch.
Moving off the managed connection (whichever API) is still an important part of
this refactor. Maybe it can be done module by module? It'll probably mean
HBaseTestingUtility has loads of extra method signatures for a while.
