I wrote the following dummy test

{code}
  @Test
  public void testDummy() throws Exception {
    Thread t = new Thread() {
      public void run() {
        fail();
      }
    };
    t.start();
    t.join();
  }
{code}

And it failed with the following output
{code}
Exception in thread "Thread-2" java.lang.AssertionError:
        at org.junit.Assert.fail(Assert.java:91)
        at org.junit.Assert.fail(Assert.java:98)
        at
org.apache.hadoop.hbase.master.TestDistributedLogSplitting$3.run(TestDistributedLogSplitting.java:294)
{code}

To me it looks like that calling fail() or junit-asserts in a spawned thread is
equally effective as in the main thread. (I ran this in my eclipse IDE.)
