I can't reply to it, but I want to make sure the discussion doesn't get lost https://github.com/apache/hbase/pull/6370#discussion_r1888431642 Are we sure that we don't want to support both behaviors indefinitely? This new behavior doesn't come for free. Importantly, on all backups, you're doing additional work that you instead would have done during the restore process. The restore process theoretically happens far less frequently than actually taking the backups.
