Merged into master thanks [~rcmuir], [~dweiss], and [~gerlowskija] for sanity
checking, feedback, and testing.
I'm going to run it through its paces on branch_8x as well since the failures
happen there as well. If precommit/few test runs look good, I'll merge into
branch_8x. That should be later tonight few hours from now or tomorrow ~15hrs
from now.
