Only if you're curious, [~tomoko] - I'm not shoving this into your face. 

I think Gradle's default VM can be globally replaced (java compilation task, 
javadoc location) if we detect "runtime.java.home" property (as currently used 
in tests; LUCENE-9122). ES takes a similar approach but they use a plugin (you 
can peek at how they do it, of course).
