I realize this is a large PR. I am happy to go into more details in anything that doesn't make sense (probably indicates the code isn't very readable or there should be better comments...) I hope this is a step in the right direction, anybody ready for a review as it is now? Requiring 4x less space with minimal recall reduction is nice :).
