The different version numbers for artifacts vs. models are already a fact of
life. For example, Maven 2.0.x uses maven-model 4.0.x.
IMO we need a visual marker that something is "different", and then to explain
how to interpret the information. I remain convinced that users will adapt to
it, and that it's better than the confusion we have now.
+1 to go ahead with the changes in modello-maven-plugin and start using this.
