I think this would be great to experiment with on a branch, but I'm -1 to
introducing an alpha dependency into any plugins, no matter how stable the code
behind it might be. We have to break that habit - if Mercury is ready to be
used in this context, take the extra steps to produce a 1.0.0 release first.
