Maven Project Builder hogs up workbench when repository servers are not

Hi,
when some repository servers are not responding the Project Builder (or is it
mvn?) is waiting for ages before it realizes that the server is currently not
responding; that is being repeated with every artifact the builder wants to
pull. It is extremely annoying because it blocks off any eclipse operation
(saving files, closing workbench, etc.). Even activating "Offline" in the
properties does not change anything.
