What is your idea of "native tar"? GNU tar? Helwet Packard tar? Darwin's BSD
tar? Solaris tar? star? And for each of those, which version? Some command line
parameters have evolved over time. Some maven users (like me) are still running
on quite old infrastructures. :)
How do you plan to test compatibility and consistent behaviour with all those
versions?
How do you plan to reserve softlink under windows?
I don't see how speed can be an issue, have you cases where .tar building is so
slow that it takes more time than running your unit tests?
IMHO, if you need in some cases to resort to a specific native software, use
the exec plugin to run it.
