I cannot see how the presence of a 1 yr old bug warrants a separate release.
Let's
# Add an upgrade note to the upcoming 8.9 release - that users should inspect
state.json files for "null" values before upgrading
# Make the validation more lenient as suggested by AB (which may or may not
make the 8.9 deadline)
# Fix the (pre-8.5?) bug that causes null-values to be written. This bug may
have other side effects as well
