Given there's disagreement in changing this behaviour (is it bug or not?) I suggest the following steps: 1) isolate the changes for the MM issue if possible in a separate Pull Request 2) find someone else opinion on both topics of this Pull Request ( the string field sow bug and the MM bug) Should I tag any other people @dsmiley ?
