For this upgrade, we should continue using the deprecated functions, and have a 
separate issue/PR dedicated to migrating off these deprecated APIs. The old 
APIs are still supported in order to enable this kind of incremental approach.

Thanks for surfacing this though, and thanks for working on the 9.5 upgrade!
