David Smiley commented on SOLR-16856:
-------------------------------------

Users indeed often make their own config by copying the default one and
changing to their requirements.

I see autoCommit & autoSoftCommit as very different. The former is more of an
internal matter that very few users would want to bother changing. I wish it
was configured as such internally (in code) and not visible in our shipped
configSets (which should be stripped down similarly for many other elements).
The latter is rather fundamental as to when documents should be visible. As
you know there are several ways to achieve the latter; autoSoftCommit is just
one.

I recognize this provides a slightly better onboarding experience sometimes....
albeit making commits explicit when you are learning adds value IMO (a teaching
point to an important concept).

> Use autoSoftCommit with the default configSet

> The default autoCommit/autoSoftCommit settings that ship with Solr's default
> configSet are listed as such:
>
> <autoCommit>
>   <maxTime>${solr.autoCommit.maxTime:15000}</maxTime>
>   <openSearcher>false</openSearcher>
> </autoCommit>
> <autoSoftCommit>
>   <maxTime>${solr.autoSoftCommit.maxTime:-1}</maxTime>
> </autoSoftCommit>
>
> With "openSearcher" set to false on the autoCommit, and no autoSoftCommit
> being used, there is little guarantee as to when users can expect to see
> their documents returned from Solr.
>
> We should use a pretty NRT-ish number for the default autoSoftCommit, like
> 3000.
