i want to set the media box with negative x and y coordinates,
OK. Perfectly legal, albeit unusual.
because my point of origin of any elements is relative to the trim
box. so the media box has to be larger than the trim box. the page
size of the document equals the trim box.
Yes, I've seen that before.
can i do so or do i have to set the page size to the media box?
You can indeed do so - BUT the physical page size will
ALWAYS be the MediaBox. That's how PDF defines it. And the visible
page size will ALWAYS be the CropBox (which defaults to Media, if an
explicit one isn't present).
Trim is ONLY used in certain workflows and is NOT a
(normally) visible box.
setting the media box with different values to page size (doesn't
matter if negative or positive) seems to have no affect. the media
box is allways [0,0,page width, page height]. is this behavior
correct or is it a bug?
It's more than likely a "design decision" in iText - but you
can easily override it...OR since you have the source, change it.
