It seems there is more to this. After using the code above to save the png, photoshop told me the image was 72dpi. Using the libpng library I was able to see that the meta data for the resolution of the new image doesn't exist, but it does for the original. So the problem seems to be that either BufferedImage or ImageIO strips the image of any resolution information. Of course this makes it more difficult to then insert into iText and scale it properly.
