Thank you, that may be the whole problem right there. You're right, I 
might have found that if I had looked more carefully at the BouncyCastle 
site.

I assumed that if there was some special trick involved in setting up 
BouncyCastle, it would have been mentioned somewhere in iText or that 
iText users could point me in the right direction to a solution. After 
all, if there are lots of iText users and all of them install 
BouncyCastle too - especially in Eclipse - it would seem reasonable that 
all of them would have stumbled on the need to do something special. 
Right now, it sounds plausible that this missing policy file in JDK 1.6 
is the problem. I have certainly not downloaded any such policy file, 
although possibly Eclipse already has it installed somewhere.

I'll give this a try and check back here if it doesn't solve my problem.
