It's also going to make life harder for some of us to make sure things work on 2.4. We have some framebuffer changes to make that i was going to merge in with the new 0.4.1 but need testing on 2.4. I have a 2.4 kernel installed that still boots on the system but it's not got hotplug support so i can't use it any more and i have no intention of installing another 2.4 kernel on it.
Would it not make sense to leave the old firmware loader in place if hotplug support isn't available?
