I have read somewhere that DVI allows for "device certifications", or whatever it is called. THis means, that both DVI devices need to know about their counter-part be able to communicate. This allows the manufacturers to make devices comaptible only with thier own brands, but more importantnly it allows to put restrictions on whether one can make or even watch a recording.
